How did we get here?

Noah
Read Genesis 6:1-12.
1. Genesis 6:1-4 = spiritual rebellion & the origins of Babylon
a. Genesis 6:1 - theme - multiplied / became numerous (covenant)
b. Genesis 6:2, the sons of God see ‘tob’ / good (Eve Genesis 3:6 & Cain Genesis 4:7)
i. all three of these do what is good in their own eyes, but YHWH says it’s actually evil
c. Gen 6:4 - the first and last stories in this narrative are about illicit sex
1. Genesis 6:1-4 between angels and human women
2. Genesis 9:20-27 between a son and either his mom or dad
a. “uncovering your father’s nakedness”
ii. Leviticus 20:11
iii. Deuteronomy 22:30
2. Genesis 6:5-12 = human rebellion
a. Genesis 6:5, wickedness multiplied - YHWH saw ‘ra’ / evil
i. The central line of the entire narrative is
1. Genesis 8:1 - God made wind ‘ruah’ blow over the Earth/waters (Genesis 1:2)
2. Exodus 14:21, 15:10 etc..
3. Covenants
a. Adamic
b. Noahic (Gen 9:16)
4. Cycles
a. As the cycles progress, they will help unpack the earlier ones
5. Seeds
a. The narrative repeatedly follows different seed lines hoping that they might be the One.
6. ‘Taking’
a. God took man and ‘rested’ him in the garden (Gen 2:8)
b. God took Adam’s rib
c. Eve took fruit
d. Lamech took two wives
e. The sons of God took human women
7. Rest
a. God ‘rested’ man in the garden (Gen 2:15 put/settled/rested*)
b. 7th day
c. ‘Noah’ means ‘rest’
8. “has come to Me”
a. Abel Gen 4:10
b. Noah Gen 6:13
c. Soddom Gen 19:12-13
9. Noah passed a test of faith by building the ark
10. Others are saved through the actions of a righteous man

c. Job 38:7 “7 when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?”
d. Psalm 89:6 “6 For who in the skies can be compared to the Lord? Who among the heavenly beings is like the Lord,”

f. Deuteronomy 32:8 “8 When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance, when he divided mankind, he fixed the borders of the peoples according to the number of the sons of God.”

3. There is a heavenly seed trying to populate the Earth with their own seed, against the will of YHWH

4. Nephilim (naphal = to fall)

1. sons of Anak (Anakim)
i. Bashan is the Aramaic word for snake - Og was the king of snakeland
i. 1 Samuel 17:4 “4 And there came out from the camp of the Philistines a champion named Goliath of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.”
e. Amos 2:9 “9 “Yet it was I who destroyed the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height of the cedars and who was as strong as the oaks; I destroyed his fruit above and his roots beneath.”
b. Nephilim were celebrated by Israel’s neighbors but they are spreading the seed of the snake
c. You know who they are - the ancient mighty men (gibbor = mighty warrior) of renown - they made life hard for our ancestors.
i. gibborim = mighty warriors that fell / Nephilim
1. Gen 10:8-9 - Nimrod
2. 1 Samuel 9:1 - Kish (Saul’s dad) was a gibbor
a. 1 Sam 9:2 - Saul is head and shoulders taller than anybody else
ii. they gain honor and a great name through their conquests in battle
1. think titans
iii. Joshua started the conquest against them
iv. David killed the remainder of them off
The Ark
1. Ark - Tebah
a. Egyptian word meaning a box/shrine for an idol/image or a coffin
2. Thirds
a. Eden > Garden > Tree = courtyard, Holy place, Holy of Holies
b. Ark (Gen 6:16) lower, middle, third
c. Temple (1 Kings 6:5-6) lower, middle, third
